Commissioned by the Department for Transport, the Road Safety Management Capacity Review suggests that a 5% decrease in the national speed limit could reduce deaths on rural roads by 30%.
In 2012, the government ran a public consultation to restrict many rural roads to 40mph. At the time, Ralph Smyth, from the Campaign to Protect Rural England, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “It seems strange that you’ve got minor roads, often that are just tarmaced tracks, that have a speed limit of 60mph – just 10mph less than the motorways.”
The new report also recommends introducing more average speed cameras, as statistics that suggest they reduce fatal and serious collisions by 36%. (BMF)
